Sylvia McClain is a professional harpist with many years of experience. She possesses a broad musical repertoire and has played in every capacity including political functions at the U.S. Capitol, State Department, and various embassies. A student of Alice Chalifoux, Jeanne Chalifoux and Marjorie Tyre, Sylvia spent several summers at the Salzedo School in Camden, Maine. and graduated cum laude from Birmingham-Southern College with a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Music Degree in Harp.
Sylvia is on the faculty at the Community Music School of the Piedmont in Upperville, VA, and also maintains a private studio in Lovettsville, VA. Sylvia welcomes all students in her private studio in Lovettsville, VA and at the Community Music School of the Piedmont in Upperville, VA (harp is taught at the satellite location in Purcellville). Prior musical training is not required. A mother of seven children, Sylvia enjoys teaching students of all ages. Adult students are welcome too. Sylvia's students have opportunities to play in harp ensembles and small instrumental ensembles. She has several students who participate in the “Strings Program” in Loudoun County schools. Every November Sylvia presents her students in an annual recital at the beautiful historic Waterford School in Waterford, VA. Her students also have opportunities throughout the year to play in recitals at the Community Music School of the Piedmont in Upperville.
Sylvia is a member of the American Harp Society, International Society of Folk Harpers and Craftsmen, Loudoun Arts Council, Music Teachers National Association, Northern Virginia Music Teachers Association, the American String Teachers Association, and the Virginia String Teachers Association.
